Net metering allows customers with PV systems to run their electric meters backwards when they are generating more electricity than they are using.
PV systems produce more electricity at certain times (sunny days) than at other times (at night and on cloudy days). In most installations, when the PV system is generating more electricity than the customer is using, the excess electricity is fed into the electric grid. Conversely, when the PV system is generating less electricity than the customer is using, the customer draws power from the grid.
Net metering provides a very simple and inexpensive way to track the customer's net use of power from the grid. It also provides an economic boost to PV, by effectively giving the customer the full retail price for all electricity they export into the grid.
SEBANE is sponsoring legislation in Massachusetts, Senate Bill 1826, that will expand the size of systems eligible for net metering and allow the customer to carry any net generation forward from month to month.
